The Diana and Minerva commode
The Diana and Minerva Commode, originally made by Thomas Chippendale for Harewood House. The piece takes its name from the Two Roman Goddesses who have been veneered in fine marquetry roundels flanking the central section.
Diana, goddess of the hunt, can be seen in the finely veneered and engraved emblem of the crescent moon, bow and whippet. On the opposing side, is Minerva, goddess of the arts, war and justice who is shown with her helmet, spear, shield and an owl.
The commode is vastly decorated with intricate marquetry incorporating various specialist veneers such as rosewood, ebony, tulipwood, maple and many more. The commode with three doors, the central of elegant concave form, all below three discreet drawers to the
commode’s frieze. The commodes uprights with cast brass decorative ornaments of floral form.
